Object history

In May 1936 quite serious consideration was given to a design for the crown, serious enough indeed that it was to make it all the way through to this extremely rare pattern uniface piece now in the Royal Mint collection. The beautifully composed shield of the Royal Arms was, however, upstaged by elaborate mantling judged to be far too fussy; and such was the profusion of heraldic detail that the satellite national floral emblems were all but lost – the daffodil appearing particularly indistinct. Although rejected, it still stands as a testament to Kruger Gray’s heraldic imagination.
